Overview

Teleo™ products are proving popular as effective "teaching and learning tools" at the post-secondary level. To date, Teleo can be found in more than 60 colleges and universities in more than 15 countries around the world. Professors and students, alike, find Teleo's "plug and play" architecture easy to set-up and work with, and empowering to those students less interested in soldering electronic components and programming microprocessors, and more focused on actually designing, building and tinkering with their projects.

The modularity and networkability of the Teleo line allows for flexibility and easy expandability, as projects change and become more complex.   Students use only those components they need at the time, no more or no less.   At the same time, this modularity allows for the easy dismantling of projects so that either the same students or next semester's students can use individual hardware components again and again.   That's good news not only for students and professors in the classroom but for faculty and administrators responsible for budgeting and purchasing.

Academic Applications

Professors and university departments in a wide range of disciplines - from the fine arts to the pure sciences -- are finding ways to integrate Teleo™ into their respective curricula. Teleo allows for hands-on, project-based learning that can take place in any environment - be it a studio, a lab or a dorm room.    Specific projects can range, for example, from the design and development of an interactive sculpture that senses, reacts and moves in the physical world, to the construction of a scientific instrument that reads data from environmental sensors and, in turn, triggers and controls motorized equipment.

Educational Services

Aside from selling Teleo teaching & learning tools to academic institutions, MakingThings offers a handful of educational services as well.   These services include:

  • Curriculum assistance.   MakingThings works closely with professors and departmental heads to integrate Teleo into existing curricula.   This can involve the creation of a series of weekly tasks or projects that correspond to the content being taught at the time.   It can also involve the creation of stand-alone academic modules that augment an existing scope and sequence of material.
  • Guest Lectures.   MakingThings personnel are often asked to guest lecture at colleges and universities.   These lectures can last anywhere from 1-3 hours with topics ranging from "What is Physical Computing" to "Designing Your Project" to "Basic Electronics" and more.
  • Workshops.   MakingThings has presented both full-day workshops as well as multi-day workshops at educational conferences, technology and science museums, and colleges and universities.   There are several curricula and formats from which to choose.   If appropriate, MakingThings will also work with institutions to create and customize new academic programs.

To find out more about Teleo in the classroom, or to discuss any of our educational services, please send an email to MakingThings at info@makingthings.com or call us at 415-255-8329.
