About MakingThings

Company Overview :

Founded in 1998 by a talented design & engineering duo, and surrounded by an experienced team of developers and project managers, the company specializes in the rapid prototyping and development of digital devices, exhibits and environments. The company is particularly adept at building, and helping others to build, complex projects that combine software with electronics and that integrate non-traditional input and output devices (such as sensors, motors, and more).

MakingThings has two complementary business lines:

Contract Services

Makingthings provides contract design and engineering services to a variety of software and hardware-related entities in need of solutions. Customers range from individual entrepreneurs prototyping new product ideas, to exhibit designers creating unique displays and installations, to established industrial design firms outsourcing complex projects that require a unique range of expertise, from interaction design to software development to electronics and mechanical engineering.

MakingThings' software expertise spans a variety of programming languages (C/C++, Java and ActionScript) on a variety of platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux). Electronics expertise includes deep knowledge of analog and digital systems, microcontrollers and embedded solutions, and a wide assortment of user input and output devices.

Makingthings' ability to offer quick and cost-effective solutions rests not only on the company's internal expertise but on the company's library of proprietary development tools and its close connection to a community of talented independent contractors.

Prototyping & Development Tools

For those individuals and companies that are interested in prototyping and developing projects themselves, MakingThings markets a line of inexpensive, easy-to-use tools. These tools, labeled under the Teleo™ brand name, consist of modular and networkable components, ranging from input and output controllers to a wide range of sensors and accessories.

Each Teleo hardware module comes with its own software component that can be easily controlled using any one of a number of programming environments including C/C++, Macromedia’s Flash and Cycling74’s Max. In addition, a simple text mode can be used in any programming environment that can read and write text to a serial port.

Teleo appeals to individual designers, artists, and hobbyists who are passionate about "making things" and who are looking for a versatile and affordable means to realize their most excellent creations.

Teleo products are also proving to be popular teaching and learning tools, particularly at the post-secondary level. This appeal spans a wide range of university departments and classes -- from Art & Technology to Interaction Design to Music Technology to Product & Industrial Design to Architecture to pure and applied sciences like Physics and Electrical Engineering.
