Max 5 Compatibility?

Posted by Steven Cross at April 23. 2008
Hi all! I purchased my first Make Controller last week and downloaded a demo version of Max 4.6 with which to experiment (I haven't used Max for at least 10 years so I am essentially a newbie) and all was working well. As I was about to upgrade my antique Max license, version 5 was released. The directory structure has changed a bit so I am using a bit of trial and error in figuring out where to put the Make externals, etc. but it seems that they are no longer working. Can anyone who i successfully using Max/MSP with a Make Controller confirm that this is the case? I would like to rule out my inexperience as a factor. If the externals work with Max 5, would you be so kind as to post instructions on where to place the assorted files? Thanks!

Shucks - I hadn't seen that they had actually released it Max 5. I'm not sure if the existing externals work in Max 5, but I have had builds working in Max 5 for sure. I'll try to bundle some up and release them soon. In the meantime, the place to put your externals is within the Cycling '74/max-externals directory.

I have all my externals (both OSC and mc.usb) in cycling74/max-externals, still no dice through mc.usb. My mcHelper app still gets through to my board but nothing from maxmsp. Anybody get max 5 to work with the board?

Oh, I also wanted put the call out for any example patches that people might have that they'd like to share. If you have any patches you've found helpful that others might benefit from in the download, please drop me a line - liam at makingthings dot com. Thanks!

I have tried everything I can think of and I can't get anything working in Max 5. Liam, if you could post something that works with Max 5 it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hiya - I haven't had time to test it super thoroughly, but here's an OS X version that should get you going in Max 5. Let me know if you have any trouble. http://www.makingthings.com/resources/downloads/temp/mc.usb-osx-v0.3.dmg

Many thanks Mr. Staskawicz! That seems to have done the trick! Just one quick question... The second Max example patch, LED_Scrolling_02, doesn't work correctly for me. This isn't specifically a Max 5 question as it didn't work (in a different way) in Max 4.6. Basically, I am able to click the toggles that are connected to the mc:appled and the LEDs switch on and off as expected but when I start the metro the only LED that works is 3. It turns on and off when it should but the other three do nothing. I see the metro sweeping across them but only the fourth one ever lights up. In Max 4.6 one of the other LEDs toggled so I had a sort of random looking pattern but no sweep as it should be. This patch has never worked for me. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on what might be going on. Thanks and thanks again for the Max 5 support!

Hmm - I must confess I haven't looked at that example in many moons. I'll take a look and make sure it works as expected before making a real release - thanks for the report!

Eeek. I was going crazy myself trying to figure it out. I think the Max 5 / Windows combination is dud as well. Can anybody confirm and/or let us know how to get it working in windows with Max 5?

I have the Make Controller working fine in Max5, Mac & Windows. Followed Liam's instructions as above.

Eight IR sensors for one project and have just tested three servos and a DC motor.

BTW that second Max example - LED_Scrolling_02, will never work correctly as the logic is all wrong, the '0' is toggling all the lights off as fast as they come on, I think.

No time to solve it now, but I will try to find time to have a go soon.
