help with motion sensor

Posted by daniela steinsapir at June 13. 2007
Hi there I am trying to use the Passive Infrared Sensor and it is not sensing. I developed a case that helps it not to sense from the sides but it is not helping me. is there tips to help me to trouble shoot and make it work? many thanks, Daniela::huh:

check that your analog input pin is working first , the infra red sensor is nothing more than a switch , so connect the pin to ground and it should imitate that the sensor has seen something if that works fine then either your sensor is bad , or what you are trying to sense is wrong remember a infra red sensor is looking for heat i.e a human body , dog etc , and not an object such as a chair or wall , for that you need ultrasonic sensors let me know how you get on

thank you. But it does not work. and I have 4 motion sensors so I do not think that all of the are bad.. I connect it properly my board is working fine because i did use another sensor to test it and that is fine I have the jumper at 5v what else can i do to figure this out? any help is welcome! D:huh:

Hi Daniela. If you hook the sensors up one at a time, do any of them work? Are you doing this in Max? If so, try opening a new patch--that only reads the analog input--just to make sure that there is nothing else going on in the patch that is interfering. Also, do you have any external power source connected to the board? I found that those sensors will not work well unless there is an adaptor plugged in. If that doesn't help, I would suggest testing it without the case--maybe just point it at a wall and move your hand in front of it. There is a delay in the PIR sensors, so it takes a moment for it to read out 5, and then it resets back to 0, only after there has been no motion for about a second or 2. Let me know if that helps. Hello, I ran into the same problem. For me, it came down to powering the MC board externally, which Kater mentioned. Also, make sure the jumper is set to 5v for the inputs you are using. I used MC helper with heavy loaded on the board, and sent OSC messages to test the status of the input. For some reason, i get a lengthy (30 sec) delay on sensing when performing similar tests in C, which I don't get using OSC.

Hi Two of my sensors were damaged. One had a very thin scratch, that apparently unable it to work. One of them started to work after several minutes after being connected to the board. At the end the signal was very stable. Thank you for the help D

Hello!
I wonder if there is a PIR that have a larger range (> 20 m ~ 65ft) and if I can use it with the Make Controller Kit with out problems.
