communication Problem with xbee pro

Posted by Claude Frenette at August 18. 2008

Hi,

I have problem make xbee pro to communicate with the MC Board.

I read the complete discussion about upgrading the firmware of xbee with x-ctu and i think i had succes with that except that the firmware of my xbee pro are of version 1084. Clicking on find update report that i am up to date with this version. The MC firmware is heavy-1.5.1.

So i follow all the steps on the tutorials call : XBee Wireless Interface and on the Make Wireless motion detector with no succes. I try with a light sensor bought from MakingThings. Pluging the sensor directly in the MC board input works very well.

What can i do to make it works?

I am very new to MakeControler (4 days!).

Any help will be appreciate.

Thanks

Claude

You'll definitely need to upgrade the firmware on your XBee module as is described in http://www.makingthings.com/documentation/how-to/update-xbee-settings-with-x-ctu Otherwise, it doesn't know how to send all the IO values automatically. Hopefully that should get you going.

Is 10CD version OK? I don't know where to find the 10C0 version.

Thanks for your help.

Well! it does not works.

I did not found the version 10C0 but found the version 10C8 and 10CD Try both without success except for installing the firmware.

Check all the soldering on the xbee cardand every things seems OK

Power Up the remote xbee with 2 AA batteries plug in V+ and ground on the left hand side of the xbee card, try all the inputs on the right hand side for the sensor.

MC is power by USB

Thanks for your help

Claude

Perhaps you could provide some details, so we can help. What are you trying to do? What have you tried so far that has not worked?

Hi Liam,

As i said, i am new to MC and Xbee. For the moment, i just try to make some tests using the tutorial on this site.

This is what I did :

1. assemble the XBee Kit, one with externals connectors and one without it.

2. I was able to upload new firmware to the Xbee with a XT PC (latest version seems to be 10CD)

3. Install Heavy 1.5.1 on the MC Board

4. l Follow the instructions on this tutorial http://www.makingthings.com/documentation/tutorial/xbee-wireless-interface with a Light sensor into input AD0 of the XBee (red wire on the 3.3v, black on the ground and yellow on AD0 and a AA bateries pack plug into Groung and V+ (left side of the xbee card)

I received some random 1 and 0 from analog input of the board (even if xbee is not plug in) but nothing from the Xbee.

For the test, i used a MAC G5 PPC, with Tiger (10.4)

I also test with MAX-MSP mc.analogin objet (works perfectly with senson plug directly into the MC board but not with XBee.

I also test the XBee power with a voltmeter reading 2,6 V (DC) at the output connectors (3,3v)

That's where I am!

Thanks for your patience and your help.

Claude

No worries :) How have you configured your XBee module? Have you configured the appropriate channel as an analog input? Did you make sure the sample rate is something reasonable? Did you turn xbee autosend on from your Make Controller?

I send those messages to the remote using mchelper:

/xbeeconfig/packet-mode 1

/xbeeconfig/address 12

/xbeeconfig/io0 2

/xbeeconfig/samplerate 50

/xbeeconfig/write 1

then plug the receiver and send:

/xbeeconfig/packet-mode 1

/xbeeconfig/write 1

then :

/system/autosend-usbĀ  1

/system/autosend-interval 10

/xbee/autosend 1

exactely as it appear in the tutorial

Then I plug the sensor into 3.3v Ground and AD0 abd the batteries pack into the two firstĀ  entry on the left side labeled ground and V+

In Max, i send /system/autosend 0 and used metro 100 to look at the data. As in the help of mc-analogin

Thanks

Claude

Claude, perhaps I can help

I have uploaded some useful content for the xbees onto my page here at makingthings

http://www.makingthings.com/Members/tunell/xbee-files/

This page contains profiles for the receiver and transmitter. By plugging each one in and writing the profile to the xbee device as well as uploading the firmware to the included 10C0, you should be able to establish communication. You may also decide to fine tune them after doing so.

I spent a long time configuring these profiles, and they work great for me. I have added them to multiple xbee units successfully.

Hi Aaron,

Many thanks for that help. I know how to upload the firmware but can you explain me how to install those profiles? Am I Abusing?

Thanks
Claude

use the files linked to above and upload them to your xbee modules using XCTU
