Problem with loading new firmware to Make Controller

Posted by Andy Walker at September 03. 2008
Hi there, I hope somebody can help me. I am new to makingthings and I'm trying to complete the zigbee project motion sensor. I cannot upload the new firmware xctu.bin to the Make Controller. I have completed ERASE, unplug, replug and can then see the Samba in the mchelper. I then choose the xctu.bin file, select upload, but nothing happens. The % bar remains at 0% and there is a static red light on the MC. I would really appreciate any help on this - I cannot seem to get any further! Many thanks in advance Andy

what tools are you using to upload the firmware? What OS are you using? with that information we will have a better idea on how to help you. EBo --

I initially used MS Windows XP Pro SP2 in VMWare virtual machine running on a Mac. This was using the McHelper program. I've also tried (after connecting the two pins in order to erase firmware) running McHelper on a laptop running MS Vista Home edition directly. Neither seem to work.

With both approaches, the SAMBA board seems to be recognised correctly, although the light on the board is always red and the % complete bar does not move from 0%. It's as if the "upload" button just moves in and out whilst being clicked, without actually engaging the upload functionality.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Andy

Which version of mchelper are you using? I assume the device shows up appropriately in the Device Manager? Sometimes I've seen Windows create a stub device when it screws up. It creates an "Unknown Device" under the USB section - you'd want to right-click and remove this if it were there. Have you tried plugging into a different USB port on your computer?
