This How-to is intended for: Any audience.

How to connect and use a piezo sensor with the Make Controller Kit.

Problem

You want to connect a piezo sensor to the Make Controller Kit.

Piezo sensor
A piezo sensor.

Solution

The piezo sensor has two leads coming out of it - orientation of the two leads does not matter.  On the Make Controller Kit, you'll want to connect:

  • One lead of the sensor into a VIn set to 3.3V.  This is the default voltage for the inputs, so if you haven't touched it, screw straight into VIn1.  Otherwise, set the voltage jumpers on your inputs back to 3.3V.
  • The other side into an Analog In on the Make Controller.
Piezo Sensor Connected
A piezo sensor connected (left to right) to VIn1 and Analog In 0.

Discussion

The piezo sensor is sensitive to quick displacements of its tip.  It works best when given a firm flick.
